~ ~ ~
The School Board continues to insist that the proponents of saving the historic J. B. Thomas building are a small, vocal minority. Let's all work together to show them the inaccuracy of this estimation!

If you would like to see the Old School preserved, talk to your friends and neighbors about it. You are not alone! Spread the word and tell everyone you know. Together we can make a difference.

...Becoming a Member of FOTOS

FOTOS is a membership organization and you’re invited to join. The suggested membership donation is $10, but FOTOS will gratefully and cheerfully accept any amount (less or more) that you generously donate as part of the effort to save the historic J. B. Thomas building from demolition. Please make your check payable to Friends of the Old School and mail it, along with your contact information, to:

Friends of the Old School

Many thanks to all the folks who have recently joined!

...Getting Positive Media Coverage for the Old School

The left-hand sidebar on this page contains a list of newspapers and their respective access portals through which letters to the editor may be mailed, faxed or emailed. Please send a message to at least one of these papers (or all of them is even better!). This is a wonderful way to make your feelings known and to contribute to the effort to save the Old School.

Signing the FOTOS petition is an additional way to help. Did you know that, so far, over 1,000 people have signed this petition asking the School Board to allow FOTOS or the City of Hillsboro to conduct a feasibility study (to explore adapting the historic Art Deco-style building for another public use)? If you or someone you know would like to sign, or if you'd like to help collect signatures, please contact any FOTOS board member.

Finally, visit this website often for updates and keep an ear out for news and events organized by FOTOS (or others advocating for the Old School's preservation). You can make a big difference simply by showing your support as a participant in publicized events.

...Sharing Your Opinion with the School Board

Please compose an email or write a letter and then send a copy to each of the members of your school board, expressing your desire to see the historic J. B. Thomas building preserved in order to serve a new purpose for the Greater Hillsboro Area community.

The mailing address for the school district administrative office is:

(Insert intended recipient's name here)
Hillsboro School District 1J
3083 NE 49th Pl.
Hillsboro, OR  97124

And the email addresses for the individual school board members are:

Carolyn Ortman ortmanc@hsd.k12.or.us
Hugh O'Donnell odonnellh@hsd.k12.or.us
Patti McLeod mcleodp@hsd.k12.or.us
Adriana Cañas canasa@hsd.k12.or.us
Lisa Poehlitz poehlitzl@hsd.k12.or.us
Rebecca Lantz lantzr@hsd.k12.or.us
John Peterson petersonj@hsd.k12.or.us

The School District's superintendent, Mike Scott, can be emailed at: superintendent@hsd.k12.or.us and also may be reached at the above mailing address. And remember, contacting just one of these officials is a big help but that might not be enough to save the Old School from the wrecking ball. FOTOS realizes that this entails a bit more work, but all of these officials really need to receive your message in order to make our collective voice heard. We thank you for your commitment to saving the historic J. B. Thomas building!

The public may also attend the monthly school board meetings. Regular meetings take place in the Board Room at the school district administration office (3083 NE 49th Pl. in Hillsboro) and begin at 7:30 pm. If you wish to speak to the Board, be sure to arrive a little early to fill out the necessary form. Alternatively, you may request that this form be sent to you in advance by calling (503) 844-1500. Agendas are posted on the Web page about the Board of Directors within the school district's website on the Friday afternoons prior to the meetings. To request a paper copy, call the district's office at (503) 844-1500.
